“Myths do not have to do with analyzing and scientifically discovering causes. Myths have to do with relating the human being to his environment.” –Joseph Campbell

young Joseph CampbellJoseph Campbell was an incredible teacher, of anthropology, humanities, mythology, and a great mystic guide to the spiritual life — the life of purpose, courage, discipline, sacrifice, legacy, and fulfillment.

If you want to unlock new levels of understanding about the world around you, make new connections between cross-cultural and interdisciplinary self-improvement studies, and begin to uncover a timeless roadmap for adventure, perpetual growth, accomplishment, and self-actualization, then I highly recommend you get a copy of his 1949 book The Hero With a Thousand Faces or the interview series (done by Bill Moyers) Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth.

He is best remembered for his distillation of the “Hero’s Journey monomyth” – a framework that traces the challenges that most epic heroes of literature, myth, religious practice, and even modern-day filmmaking must traverse — the fears, the dragons, the battles, and the return home as a changed person. Rooted in deeply personal accounts and timeless stories, the documentary Finding Joe shows how Campbell’s work continues to impact today’s world and how it provides a narrative for how to live a fully-realized life — or as Campbell would simply state, how to “follow your bliss”.

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder… fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won… the hero then returns from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.
